BC/DR Consultant / Sr. Technical Writer             Nutanix, San Jose, CA                            3/2019 - current

  • Working closely with IT Directors, managers, and end-users to develop a multi-phased BC/DR plan. I developed the documentation suite for the implementation of a critical DR event that would also be used for ISO certification. Phase I developed the direct recovery processes with runbook development procedures. Phase II expanded on the ISO certification requirements. Phase III, if followed, develops a fully-defined corporate-wide IT disaster recovery and business continuity response and procedures.  

 

IT Security Consultant / Sr. Technical Writer           Verizon, San Jose, CA                       11/2018 - 1/2019

  • Working with the Verizon Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Team to develop the required policies around NIST security controls and build an auditable documentation suite for implementation within the AWS GovCloud for new Verizon Public Safety/Smart Cities hardware and software products. Require knowledge of NIST, IT Security practices, networking experience, and an understanding of AWS cloud services.

 

IT Security Consultant / Sr. Technical Writer           Blue Shield CA, El Dorado Hills, CA  6/2018 - 10/2018

  • Working in a newly created IT Policy and Controls team and developing policies, standards, and processes for IT and IT Security related organization mandates. For this position, I used my years of IT knowledge in technical documentation, cybersecurity, and years working in health-related organizations to assist teams from different IT environments within Blue Shield CA to write their policy documentation and performing in an additional business analyst role to discover proper metrics and reporting options.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               Centene, Rancho Cordova, CA                           11/2017 - 4/2018

  • I assisted the IT architects and application team leads to develop network design topologies for existing and new environments. I confirmed and updated tracking documentation and Visio flows with the proper data flows, server connections, IP addresses, and supporting server details.

 

Executive Producer                               BCBC Productions, Sacramento, CA                 3/2017 - 10/2018

  • As the executive producer, I work closely with a team of producers and hosts to develop entertainment and educational content. I work closely with the production team to create a podcast and video shows for the internet and manage the day to day 501(c)3 non-profit business needs. As the lead content creator and manager, I also developed the marketing communications plan for advertisers interested in the shows, supported a social media environment to communicate with fans, essentially developing and driving the voice for both the shows and business sides of the company.

 

BC/DR Consultant / Sr. Technical Writer         Conduent, West Sacramento, CA           10/2016 - 9/2017

  • As the BC/DR Consultant / Senior Technical Writer in the Information Security & Privacy Office (ISPO), I developed and created emergency procedure documentation for the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (BR/BC) team working with all departments within Conduent. The BR/BC Manager and I interviewed and worked closely with the various departments, managers, and executive teams to collect and write required emergency event access processes. Developed quick start runbooks and provided user training for the executive staff for BC/DR events.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               CounterTack, Rancho Cordova, CA                    11/2013 - 6/2016

  • I developed and designed user guides, online help, SDKs, APIs, runbooks, white pages and marketing materials for cyber-security, intrusion detection software, and IT forensic applications using MadCap Flare and Adobe Photoshop. I used HTML, CSS and DITA/XML tools to develop and unify the company’s documentation style and appearance. I also created training and instruction videos for users to understand complex software forensics processes. I designed new and efficient documentation processes as well as implemented documentation revision tracking and redefined communication channels with the software engineers and QA.

 

Editor in Chief                                         LoSP Magazine, Sacramento, CA                      11/2010 - 7/2015

  • I hired photographers, models, and makeup artists to create images for the Ladies of Steampunk Magazine. I managed the creative team, developed production timelines, and adhere to tight budgets. I wrote and edited articles for the magazine as well as designed page flow and magazine layouts using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and additional applications in the Creative Cloud suite of tools. Additionally, I managed the print production process and schedules, developed communications for print advertising, and managed the magazine’s social media messaging and fan communications. The publication also won community and fan-favorite awards.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               Telecom Outsource, Sacramento, CA                  11/2010 - 2/2011

  • I worked with a California Highway Patrol (CHP) system update team to develop the hardware installation and upgrade processes for CHP computers, communication resources, and 911 dispatch centers. I wrote the implementation and operational documentation for the call centers including software applications and infrastructure. I worked closely with the site investigation teams to create an easy to understand installation plan.

 

BC/DR Consultant / Sr. Technical Writer           Sutter Health, Rancho Cordova, CA        5/2008 - 11/2008

  • I worked in a disaster recovery/business continuity development team to build an emergency recovery process for their new disaster recovery data center. I created operational documentation plans for the data centers network with detailed topologies, software applications, hardware installation plans, and infrastructure (security, power, and cabling processes) it allowed the installation teams to quickly and efficiently building the recovery data center. I worked closely with the testing team to develop system test documentation that approximated disaster scenarios. I also created emergency disaster recovery and business continuity procedures for IT support, nurses, and administrative staff. I also created review documentation for employees who were required to adhere to HIPAA requirements during emergencies.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               Skyler Technical, Concord, CA                             2/2007 - 10/2008

  • Working with software engineers, sales reps, and the marketing team, I develop documentation for an in-memory financial trading software package using FrameMaker, Acrobat, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Visio. The programming training guides and sample code and API documentation I developed was used to add customized features to Skyler software. I also created the Visio flowcharts to show how data and financial transactions flowed via the application to trade centers.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               MHM Consulting, Santa Clara, CA                      9/2006 - 9/2007

  • Working with the programming and marketing teams, I developed user guides and marketing tools for on-demand online provisioning software using FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, Acrobat, and HTML while maintaining ISO standards. I also created an online training course for end-users using Qarbon (Flash-based video capture software) and Photoshop.

 

Technical Writer                                     EDS, Rancho Cordova, CA                     7/05 - 9/06 & 8/03 - 2/05

  • Working with software engineers, doctors, nurses, and project managers, I developed the documentation, presentations, and training materials for an online help and FAQ medication and symptom discovery system used by doctors and nurses in eight states allowing for quicker diagnosis and possible drug interactions. I also created technical documentation used to track programming development, testing procedures, installation steps, and system modifications. This process required adherence to HIPAA compliant (patient privacy rights) documentation standards. I then presented the documentation to the State of California Department of Health Services' approval board.

 

Sr. Technical Writer                               VantageMed, Rancho Cordova, CA                       2/2005 - 6/2005

  • Using my previous experience with EDS I was working with software engineers, technical support teams, and trainers to create user manuals, SDKs, online help systems, and developed a new frequently asked questions database for a medical billing system and patient tracking software. All documentation required adherence and understanding of HIPAA documentation standards to mitigate and eliminate possible exposure of patient data.

ADDITIONAL COMMUNICATION SKILL HISTORY

  • I have been an IT Technical Writer for over 25 years, but that role only talks only to the world of IT. As a technical writer and communicator, it takes a lot more to be successful in this industry than just IT knowledge. So, I wanted to also share with you a few of my other accomplishments and projects that have helped me stand out from the crowd.

    • Worked in and out of radio since 1992 and internet radio/podcasting since 1994

    • Worked in Sacramento at KFBK/Y92 in the promotions and marketing department (1990 to 1993)

    • Performed stand-up comedy and improv in Sacramento and San Francisco to develop my comedy for radio

    • Wrote two short story novels (2006, 2008)

    • Developed, designed, and wrote an award-winning magazine (2012-2015)

    • Created a #1 iTunes rated podcast (2018)

    • Worked to build multiple (special interest and relationship) communities where I ran discussion groups and presented topics to the community and public at large (2004 to 2017)
